“Do good; seek justice”
(Isaiah 1:17)

2023 National Workshop on Christian Unity
comes to Milwaukee, WI , May 8-11, 2023

Developed by the Minnesota Council of Churches in response to the injustice experienced by people of color in their state and beyond, the theme for the 2023 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, “Do Good; Seek Justice (Isaiah 1:17),” will serve as theme for NWCU 2023 as well. Theologian-in-Residence the Rev. Canon Stephanie Spellers will lead us in considering the theme under three sub-topics: listening to the biblical call to justice, lamenting the lack of justice in our world, and living into justice in our communities. Each day Workshop participants will join in table conversations around the praxis of justice facilitated by the Lombard Mennonite Peace Center.

We come together as ecumenists to take up the key question posed by the 2023 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity: “How can we live our unity as Christians so as to confront the evils and injustices of our time?” We pray that the “work” of this year’s Workshop may increase our understanding of the relationship between unity and justice and renew our desire and commitment to do good and seek justice for all of God’s people.

The National Workshop on Christian Unity has advanced unity and reconciliation among various Christian communities for more than 50 years. The Workshop continues to be the only gathering of its kind at a national level in the world. The annual event brings together ecumenical representatives, ecumenists, and interested members from all churches who share one faith, one baptism in Jesus Christ.

NWCU BASIC CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Abide in my love… You shall bear much fruit

It has been quite a year, and plans have continued to change, but the National Workshop on Christian Unity will go on for 2021!  We will have an entirely online Workshop which gives us the opportunity to provide you with the same great programming and none of the travel cost.  Though we will miss being with each other physically, we are happy that we have found a way to continue to connect through this new “Covid-world.”  Some of you may have used Whova for other conferences during the pandemic, but if you have not, we promise you will catch on easily and we will provide introductions to the platform before the Workshop begins.

As usual, some network meetings will take place on Monday (April 12) prior to the opening worship.  (Look for emails from your network chairs for those details!)  Opening worship will still be Monday evening (Eastern time, late afternoon Pacific).

On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (April 13-15), we will have morning devotions followed by the three plenaries.  Our Theologian in Residence will be Fr. William Skudlarek from St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota.  He was slated to be with us in Houston and has agreed to be with us online.  He will lead us each morning in devotion and study.

We have also luckily been able to retain all of our plenary speakers; all plenaries will start at Noon EDT/9am PDT.  Tuesday will feature Msgr. Indunil Janakaratne Kodithuwakku Kankanamalage who serves as the Secretary of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.  Wednesday’s plenary will feature Bishops from several of our denominations interacting about how our church bodies can abide in God’s love working on issues around human migration. On Thursday, we will take a boots-on-the-ground approach to the same topic with two people who are driving advocacy efforts, working directly with asylum and helping those in need at the border.

In addition to our headline programming we are prepared to offer several great seminars and a new way to experience our exhibit hall.  This year as we will not have physical tables, you will be able to interact with our exhibitors and sponsors via video conferencing and informational videos.  We look forward to what some of these “coffee hour” opportunities might offer in this new platform!

We are excited to be with each of you, albeit at a safe distance; we shall still be one in Christ.

Looking forward to being with all of you,

The National Planning Committee

Welcome to the National Workshop on Christian Unity 2017

A Special Event to mark Reform, Repentance, and Reconciliation among the Followers of Christ.

The 2017 National Workshop for Christian Unity will be a very special time.  Ecumenists from across the United States will gather in Minneapolis the first week of May to reflect on themes of reformation.  A primary focus will be on commemorating the 500th anniversary of transformational events in the Wittenberg of 1517 that initiated both a series of reforms and tragic tensions among Christians in western Europe.  It will be a time to engage in reform and the reformers of the Church, both past and present.  And it will be a time to work together on our common journey to heal the wounds of discord and separation so that the world may believe.

For those who have attended National Workshops in the past, they will notice several new features in 2017.  Several national denominational leaders will be with us to mark the amazing gifts of reconciliation that we have experienced over the past several decades.  These gifts include new relationships among church bodies, as well as new commitments to restoring communion among traditions.  A concert around the themes of reform, repentance, and reconciliation will take place during the Workshop.  Attendees will have the opportunity to get out of the hotel and experience ecumenical ministries in the community.  There will be an option to participate in a special tour of ecclesial art and architecture in the Twin Cities.  Plenary sessions on-site will highlight new approaches to ecumenical and interreligious engagement.  And special plenary sessions are scheduled to bring denominational representatives together for intentional time to work on current initiatives to serve the people of God.

Check back regularly for more information and details on the 2017 National Workshop on Christian Unity.  This will be an enriching workshop for all!

Mark your calendars!
